25/06/2008 :: Background

The International Energy Agency, IEA, launched its 2nd Edition of the Energy Technology Perspective Study, ETP,in connection with the G8 Energy Minister Summit in Tokyo 6 June.

The ETP-study presents new scenarios for a sustainable energy future towards 2050.  It has been referred to as the most advanced analysis published on this context to date. According to the report the ambition set by the UN Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change to halve todays CO2- emissions by 2050 will cost 45 trillion US dollars in addition to investments already allocated for this purpose.

The so-called BLUE-scenario in the ETP-study becomes highly relevant in the context of the IPCC ambitions to reduce CO2 emissions by 50 %.   35 coal fired power plants and 20 natural gas fired plants need to be equipped with Carbon Capture and Storage annually as one condition in the Scenario to meet this target.

The main perspectives of the ETP-study requires fundamental changes in the way energy is consumed and produced.   The study concludes that given optimistic technological progress all options with a cost up to 200 US dollars would be needed in order to implement the CO2 reduction pathways in the scenario.  With less intensive technological progress cost of options involved may rise to 500 US dollars.

Norway and ETP

The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, MPE, initiated the original work of the ETP-study togother with the IEA-secretariat with a view to establish e new analytical tool internationally to illuminate the technological and political implications of the long term energy future.  The key perspectives of the Report provide a relevant context to Norwegian policies within the field of energy and the environment.

The new official in charge of ETP-work in IEA, Dr. Pieter Boot, Director of the Long-term Co-operation and Policy Analysis Office in the IEA Secretariat will present the results of the Report in Oslo on 25 June.

State Secretary  Ms. Guri Størvold, will open the Norwegian Launch, which will take place from 1100 to 1230 in the Government Quarters (R4), address: Einar Gerhardsens Plass 1.   Fridtjof Unander, Deputy Executive Director of Enova, and main author of ETP 2006 will lead the Launch event.
