Dr. Pachauri – the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of The Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change - was the main speaker at a Indo-Norwegian seminar in Oslo.
10/06/2008 :: The environment, renewable energy and the challenge of climate change are among the first priorities in the dialogue and actions between India and Norway. Innovation Norway - together with Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Royal Embassy of Norway to India - organised a seminar on climate change, CDM and renewable energy in Oslo 29th -30th of May.
Among the prominent speakers was Dr. Pachauri, the leader of IPCC .
The main purpose with the seminar was to strengthen the dialogue and actions between Indian and Norwegian businesses, research institutes and government.
The seminar was a follow up from The prime prime minister Jens Stoltenberg’s visit to India and to the Delhi Sustainability Summit in February this year. The prime minister initiated an active cooperation between businesses, research institutes and government in India and Norway. There will be a follow up seminar and report on concrete actions – hopefully also within solar energy and hydropower - in New Delhi in October/November this year.
How can Norwegian and Indian business companies, researchers and governments fight climate change? This was a central issue to be answered in the seminar, which had participants from leading Norwegian business companies, top climate researchers from both Norway and India, representatives from Norwegian and Indian business organizations and Norwegian Ministries.
Dr.Pachauri’s main topic was the impacts of climate change on world security. He was worried about he impacts on poor regions of the world – and of migration and conflicts. To fight the climate change he saw many possible areas of cooperation between Norway and India, among them adaptation and mitigation actions.
Norway has, according to Dr. Pachauri led the way for a long time, starting with the important work of Gro Harlem Brundtland, and now with the ambitious goal of being carbon neutral by 2030.
Dr.Pachauri also stressed that it is important to see that the concept of emission trading is for the good of the whole society. Climate change will impede nations’ abilities to achieve sustainable development pathways, and it can only be met by international cooperation and funding.
