Work in Norway

Last updated: 14/12/2010 // As a general rule, foreign nationals who wish to work and reside in Norway need a residence permit.

There are different rules depending on what type of work you are to carry out in Norway. For a complete list of the various types of residence permits for work, please refer to UDI.

  

Requirements and application procedure

Anyone who is applying for a residence/work permit to Norway from New Delhi should now fill in the application form, pay the application fee online and book an appointment on the secure Online Application Portal before submitting their supporting documents at the Embassy.

Please bring the printout of the application form filled online along with the covering letter from the Online Application Portal, the applicant information form and all supporting documents to the embassy.

Please consult the following link for a the list of documents that must be submitted together with the application. The boxes in the form should be checked and signed  to confirm which documents you have submitted. Please submit the documents in the order given. The list can be found here.

In connection with the preparation of the application, the applicant must provide all required information which might be of importance for the decision according to the Immigration Act section 83.

If the application is submitted for processing without satisfactory documentation, it may be rejected on this ground.

D-visa for Employment

Skilled Jobseekers

Special rules apply for skilled workers who want to come to Norway to seek employment here. You can be granted a residence permit as a jobseeker if you are a skilled worker and are subject to a visa requirement.

Please note that all applicants applying for a permit as a skilled jobseeker have to submit their application in person.

The applicant might be called for an interview at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi.

Information on how to apply for professional authorisation which is required for practising in the health profession in Norway can be found on the web-site of The Norwegian Registration Authority for Health personell (SAFH) There is no need to pay Indian agents for assistance with the application procedure, anyone can apply for authorisation directly to SAFH. www.safh.no/english/main.html

Processing time for work permits

Once the case has been sent to UDI in Norway, the Embassy has no further bearing on the case. The processing time depends on the work load at UDI at any time, but you can find an average expected processing time for the various types of permits on UDI’s Web site. Please click here.
