Norway launches India strategy

10/09/2009 // “India is a growing political and economic power factor, both regionally and globally. Developments in India offer many opportunities for Norway and the Norwegian business sector. This strategy will equip us to meet these opportunities in the best possible way.” said Norway's Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre when the Norwegian Government launched the strategy on 28 August.

Minister of the Environment and International Development Erik Solheim added: “Norway and India both share a common global destiny with regard to climate change. We all have a responsibility to find the balance between the need for development and the need to safeguard the future climate. For example, Norway will provide expertise and funding for technology that will promote economic growth with low emissions of greenhouse gases.”

Norway’s ties with India are expanding and developing rapidly. The Government’s strategy is designed to strengthen, deepen and further develop contacts in several important areas, such as climate change, health, international issues, business and culture.

In connection with the launch of strategy, the Government will establish an India forum and a research programme under the Research Council of Norway to promote Norwegian research on India and research cooperation between Norway and India.
