On 16 June political consultations were held between India and Norway in Delhi's elegant Hyderabad House. As representatives from the two ministries of foreign affairs met in the Nizam of Hyderabad's old residence, a variety of important issues were discussed.
The delegations exchanged views on bilateral issues and, amongst other things, highlighted the substantial strengthening of trade and investment over the last years. In fact, Norway was at several times referred to as a "perfect match" for India. Likewise, the Norwegian team highlighted India's growing significance for Norwegian trade and foreign policy. Both sides agreed that there was scope for an even closer relationship, not least economically - the potential is very large indeed. The Government's upcoming India-strategy will be an expression of this dynamic and increasingly important development.
A variety of international and multilateral issues were also taken into consideration, reflecting the active international engagement and presence of both countries. The consultations were highly appreciated by both sides and will henceforth take place annually. The next session is likely to be held in Oslo 2010.
The Norwegian delegation was lead by Deputy Director General Atle Leikvoll, while the Indian side was headed by Secretary (West) Nalin Surie. HE Ambassador Ann Ollestad also took part in the constructive meeting between the two countries.
