Norway and TERI to collaborate on energy and climate change
New Delhi, Thursday, 13 November 2008- The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its Embassy in New Delhi has agreed to provide 60 million Norwegian Kroners (approximately 48.8 Crore Indian Rupees) to The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) for the next five years to carry out work on energy, environment and climate change issues in partnership with other institutes. A Contract to this effect was signed by Ambassador of Norway to India, H.E. Ann Ollestad and Director General of TERI, Dr. R.K. Pachauri on 13 November, 2008.
The objective of the Framework Agreement is to address issues related to energy security and climate change through cooperation between TERI, Norwegian and other Indian and International institutions and businesses on climate change, CDM, renewable energy and energy policy. The Agreement seeks to achieve the above objectives through a set of activities aimed at bridging knowledge gaps on issues such as climate change impacts, designing of policy instruments to foster adoption of cleaner and more efficient energy options, strengthening institutions and energy governance mechanisms for more efficient and effective energy sector organisations.
The Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi has been mandated by the Norwegian Government to promote cooperation with India on energy, environment and climate change at the government level, between institutions and business-to-business. By developing partnerships with India, between industry, research institutions and government, Norway hopes to be part of analyzing and supporting a successful low carbon economic growth in India consistent with its National Action Plan for Climate Change, and at the same time help itself meet its national climate ambition of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
‘TERI has been a long standing partner for Norway and Norwegian Institutions and I believe that this agreement will benefit not only TERI and the institutions and companies that will be involved, but also India more generally in its endeavour to implement the National Action Plan for Climate Change’ said Ambassador Ann Ollestad on the occasion of signing of the Agreement.
