Cultural co-operation between Norway and India

Culture is one of the prioritised areas in the collaboration between India and Norway (Ref: Norway’s ‘Action Plan for India’). Cultural co-operation is therefore high up on the agenda for the Embassy. The main objectives for this co-operation are to actively promote professionalism within the arts and facilitate long term institutional co-operation between partners in our two countries.

In 2005 our two governments established a Joint Working Group for Culture. This working group defined the areas for cultural cooperation: music & dance, literature, visual arts, design & architecture, film and cultural heritage.

A programme for music co-operation between Norway and India has existed since 2002. The programme is coordinated by The Norwegian Concert Institute. Key partners in India are SPIC MACAY, Jazz Utsav and Rock Street Journal.

Main objectives for 2008: to establish long term projects with the areas of literature, architecture and contemporary art.

These are some of the concrete projects and plans:

• To establish a literature co-operation programme. The Embassy’s support to Norwegian writers’ participation at Delhi International Book Fair and Calcutta’s Book Fair in February 2008 was a great success. Indian poets took participated with great success in Lillehammer Literature Festival in May.
• To establish a programme for co-operation in the field of architecture and design. A successful kick-off event took place at the opening of the new Hyderabad International Airport on 16 March. This was in co-operation with the Norwegian company Aviaplan AS, the company behind the design of the airport. The Embassy has invited a group of Indian architects to visit Norway in August 2008.
• The annual Delhi Ibsen Festival has been launched. The Festival will be a co-operation between Centre for Ibsen Studies at University of Oslo, the International Ibsen Award and local actors. The local partner, who also coordinates the events, is Mr. Nissar Allana, The Dramatic Art & Design Academy (DADA). Please read more about the Festival on this website.
• A long-term cooperation is being discussed with KHOJ on how Norway best can contribute to an Eco-Art project on beautification of public space in New Delhi. The project will probably be launched before the end of this year. GTZ and Max Muller Bhavan have initialised this project.
