This Sick New Born Care Unit(SNCU) is a medical care centre based at the district hospital where the sick newborns who are referred from the maternity wards post delivery and homes of the children in the villages, are provided intensive care. The SNCU is equipped with state of art equipments and infratructure  for appropriate care of the sick newborns and manned by specially trained doctors and nurses. For this reason it is often loosely termed as the ‘ICUs’ for newborns.

NIPI is supporting the creation of  SNCUs in the states of UP, MP, Bihar, Rajasthan and Orissa through UNICEF and the State Health Societies(with UNOPS as the LFA). Similar SNCUs have been established with NIPI support in Guna(MP), Vaishali(Bihar) and Mayurbhanj(Orissa).

The SNCU at Alwar is a 25 bedded facility with a provision for addition of 6 additional beds at a later stage. NIPI is taking support from the renowned neonatologist of the country, Dr.Arun Singh, who is regarded as the pioneer of this model of highly sophisticated yet locally sustainable SNCUs.
