Come to Norway - Meet the World

Last updated: 17/01/2012 // The International Summer School in Oslo (ISS) is now accepting applications for the courses from June 23 – August 3. 2012. Every summer the ISS welcomes over 550 students from about 90 countries to participate in academic programs and learn about the Norwegian culture in an international context. The application deadline for scholarship applicants is February 1, 2012. Self-paying applicants can apply after this date.

The ISS offers 12 undergraduate courses mainly focusing on Norwegian language, culture and society, and 8 graduate-level courses centered on topics of broad international interest.

Both an Academic and a Cultural Experience
The courses at ISS adopt a comparative perspective, where the Norwegian case may serve as a basis for discussion. Courses are based on active student participation, and many of them include field visits. ISS aims at developing and conveying knowledge and at promoting understanding between people from different cultures. The courses are accredited according to the European Credit Transfer System(ECTS) and students may have credits transferred to their home universities.

In addition to academic instruction, the ISS offers a wide range of cultural events, film nights, international evenings and forums, social get-togethers, sports and local excursion to places of interest in the Oslo area. A varied weekend excursion program includes cultural heritage tours, mountain hiking and rafting, as well as a tour to Bergen and the fjords of Western Norway.

Learn in an international context
The first summer session for English-speaking foreign students at the University of Oslo was organized in 1947. Since then, about 26 000 students from more than 150 countries have attended the ISS. In recent years, the student body has consisted of around 600 students from some 90 countries. ISS’s motto can be used to describe the experience: "Six Weeks of Academic Achievement and International Good Will".

The ISS is a part of the University of Oslo, which is the oldest university in Norway. It was founded in 1811 and is the largest university in the country with a student population of slightly less than 30,000. The Blindern campus is located in pleasant surroundings, ten minutes from the city center by subway-to-surface rails and only minutes away from the lakes and wooded hills of Nordmarka.
