Norway for social sustainability

13.02.2017 // Apart from the rising business interest in India from Norwegian enterprises, the social sector is also receiving a lot of attention from Norway. A recent addition to Norwegian Non-Governmental Organizations working in India is ‘Bija Organization’. Bija is an NGO focused on working with issues related to poverty and climate change.

The NGO is currently working with a foster home, ‘Amcha Ghar’ located near Mumbai which is dedicated to destitute female children. Bija is extending financial support for running the home and ensuring that the children receive formal education and have their basic needs covered. Bija finally aims to build a larger facility for the institute to house more children.

The founder of the NGO, Trond Thorrud, is evaluating small green projects like bamboo plantation, which can make the foster home financially sustainable. Trond has been involved in various other social projects in Africa and Cambodia and has worked as a fundraiser for other global NGOs.

While financial sustainability for the social projects is the definitive goal, there are angel donors and sponsors who fund Bija for now, one among them being Ole Enger, ex- CEO, REC Solar.
